Trizact vs. Abralon and Compound Questions

Postby Stretch » Sun Jun 10, 2007 8:15 pm

Anyone have any experience with either the 3M Trizact 3000 foam finishing discs or the Abralon 2000/4000 foam finishing discs from Mirka? Looking for an alternative to hand sanding after I 1500 DA my finishes. I can't seem to find anything higher than 1500 for my DA except these foam systems. I would think someone would make 2000+ da discs.

Also, I've been seeing more alternatives for buffing compounds other than 3M or Meguiars. Any have any experience or preferences? Wizard, Menzerna or farecla?

Thanks-Stretch

Save yourself a lot of work after sanding with 1500 use Farecla G3 to bring up a quick luster and finish it off with G10 works fast and cleans up easy.

I got a sample bottle of Farécla's Total Compound and tried it a bit over the weekend. I really like that it doesn't splatter like the Meguiars. I'm sure if I used a bit less of the Meguiars I could get away from the splatter as well. The Total seems to really break down to a polish and I almost don't need to do anything else. The Meguiars Diamond Cut Compound breaks down pretty well too. I like it alot but not sure it's enough to justify the cost yet. Will keep playing and seeing how it goes. I'm not using the Farécla pad either so that may make a difference. I'm pretty much just using the 1500 3M Dry with a DA and goes to the Total. Thanks for the recommendation.

I love the Abralon discs, after sanding to 2000 grit I use a
4000 abralon, it comes out to a semi-gloss finish that
takes just seconds with a foam pad and light polish to
get a scratch free mirror shine.
They work real good with just a little water, I like to use a spray bottle
of soapy water and just hit it with a mist ocassionally.
It goes pretty fast 8)

Do you use the 4000 abralon with a DA or orbital polisher?

I have used it on a DA, but I like a air palm sander which
is less aggressive and easier to hold.. 8)

Mirka Abralon

I don't use a regular DA pad it creates heat and leaves pig tail sanding marks. Mirka makes a special palm held 6" non directional sander. I think its the best for cut and rub jobs. 1500 and a quick rub with Farecla G3 to an easy luster and top it with G10.

I've got a Dynabrade 3/32" DA that I'm pretty happy with. It does get pigtails but if I use a soft interface pad that seems to help. I also keep a microfiber towel in the other hand and wipe the surface and pad regularly. I would like to get rid of the pigtails all together but I even get them with the 1/32" Dynafine sander I have. Do you have a link for that Mirka sander?

I've been playing with the Farecla Total and just love it! I finished up a black gas tank using Total and one pad, followed by a hand glaze. I'm sold on that stuff. Now trying to find a good but less expensive 1500 and 2000 velcro film discs. 3m's are nice but $$$.

I've never gotten pig-tail scratches with the Abralon discs
when using them with water. 8)

I've never gotten them either with the abralon but I haven't mastered my clear to where I don't have any peel or dust so I usually have to do a bit of sanding before compounding.
